Mike played it conservative and did not advance his markers up the table, I was a little surprised that he did not put down entrenchments for his infantry squads.ДЄs usual I forgot to take any photos during the game, but I did advance my HMG team to within close range of one of the Soviet's deployment areas so was able to plink away with some success, I did take some casualties but was able to hold on until the Soviet's routed. I sort of screwed this up as I wanted to get the centre JOP (blue) in the exposed ground. The Finns had a starting Morale of 11 and the Soviets 8. Mike took one entrenchment, a Commissar, a Maxim HMG Team as Well as a BT7 Tank, he may have had more but that is what I saw. I took an captured Soviet LMG for one of my LMG team, a Maxim HMG Team, as well as a Satchel Charge. I as the attacker threw a 6 for support, so I got 6 supports and Mike got 15.

Unfortunately we did miss that Mike (the Soviets) was supposed to get two free entrenchments, we did count the game but I decided to give him a fresh platoon for the second game. This was played as in scenario 2 except that we played it along the long axis rather then the short. On to the first scenario 'Find the 44th'.

The Soviets will have a fresh squad of a regular SMG NKVD troops available for the final rung as Reinforcements.

A Wild Card will be available to each side during the campaign after Turn 3.Replacements can be called for once by the Soviets and once for the Finns.The Platoon Leader's Outlook will be calculated after Turn 2. The CO's and yours Men's Opinion will be calculated after each scenario. Attrition will accumulate on both platoons.To make the game more playable the Green Soviets will have 5 CD and able to deploy a complete squad in entrenchments. Army lists: the official CoC lists for the 39-40 Soviets and Winter War Finns.Victory for the Finns is taking the border station within 6 Turns, anything else is a Soviet victory.The scenarios for rungs 2 and 3 will be selected according to the tactical situation, with the previous game's loser making the selection. Scenario 2 and 6 from the main rulebook will be used for the 1st and 4th rung. The campaign structure is a unilateral 4 rung ladder.The Finns emerged victorious, inflicting 29,600 losses on the Red Army with just 2,000 losses of their own. In January 1940, the Finns launched a spectacular counterattack, dividing the Soviet 44th Rifle Division into isolated groups and destroying it on the Raate Road. On 24 December, the Soviets launched another failed counterattack against the Finns. The Finns destroyed the village of Suomussalmi to deny shelter to the Soviet troops, and the Soviets suffered serious losses while attempting to take the village on 8 December. The most important and famous battle of the war occurred at Suomussalmi, where the Finns faced two tank divisions and one tank brigade with just three regiments.

In December 1939, the Finns launched a series of counterattacks on the Karelian front, and their ski troops penetrated the Soviet lines as the Finnish forces began to rout the Soviet divisions. The Soviet 9th Army advanced towards the Gulf of Bothnia and pushed into Karelia, but the Finns would hold off their assaults. The Winter War started on 30 November 1939 with a massive Soviet invasion of Finland, pitting 700,000 Red Army troops against a mere 150,000 Finnish Army troops. The Finns destroyed two Red Army divisions in a major counterattack and captured 43 tanks and much Russian equipment, leading to Stalin sending Semyon Timoshenko to crush the Finns in the aftermath of the Suomussalmi debacle. The Battle of Suomussalmi was a major battle of the Winter War, fought between the Soviet Union and Finland from 7 December 1939 to 8 January 1940.
